Who Is Duffy Bishop?
And Why Is She Not World Famous?

Hordes showed up at the Mission Theater full of love and support for yet another extremely talented Portland Artist. A lot of people spoke up, and the line outside became a literal gathering place of around 250 friends, fellow artists, press and just plain folks who've been touched in one way or another by Duffy Bishop- most were carrying on about how special she made them feel in one way or another. "She always grabs me form the audience and sings to me!", said one guy. "She spotted me on hawthorne, went out of her way to cross the street to say hi…I could't believe it." Said another. "Duffy always makes it a point to come up to me after her shows and takes the time to talk to me." Many more accounts were told as they waited in line to gain yet another beautiful encounter.

Duffy Bishop

Sultry and sexual, beautiful and bold. Mannish boy cool, feminine frill or raggedy-Anne and mousy. She is reckless and flailing, yet graceful in her delivery --full of wanton abandon. Duffy Bishop is a risk-taker… there is NONE better.

Those of us from here have long held her in the pantheon of musical greats from the region: Curtis Salgado, Paul Delay, Tom Grant, Lloyd Jones etc. But the rest of the world by and large has been cheated. One journalist and 2 students are out to change all that.

Former KGW film reviewer Bryan Johnston's locally produced film was produced and edited with the help of 2 high school seniors who were able to sharpen and hone their skills at a trade which is becoming a popular medium in these parts. A good portion of the proceeds went to benefit breast cancer research of which Duffy herself is a survivor.

Whether more of a show of appreciation than a straight out documentary matters not; everyone went bananas for the varied collection of rare concert footage and sometimes hilarious interview segments with people like Terry Robb, Gary Fountaine, Ellen Whyte and Terry Currier.

Duffy Bishop and the audianceDuffy Bishop and the audiance.

Whodathunk so much existed out there for a woman who is supposedly NOT world famous? And are there any who argue that no one can belt, quiver, shake, rattle and roll quite like Duffy Bishop? She's as good if not better than most of the best of them. She is at once a supremely reverent servant of the blues, delivering tears to an audience with a soulful ballad as she is a pouty rock and roll performer, prowling the stage like a caged cat. Sultry and sexual, beautiful and bold. Mannish boy cool, feminine frill or raggedy-Anne and mousy. She is reckless and flailing, yet graceful in her delivery --full of wanton abandon. Duffy Bishop is a risk-taker… there is NONE better.

Her performances take on so many forms it boggles the mind and utterly thrills the senses. Tracked performances in the film include some early shows of her singing blues and rock standards. Broadway run-downs complete with hat and cane dancing and all out musical comedy routines- complete with her signature wigs and outrageous clothing.

Watching her petulantly sing and prance like a dirty-girl version of Mick Jagger in front of City Hall was worth the price of admission all on its own. Duffy is something else.

As if there were any doubt whatsoever left among us, Duffy and her band played a full-on set after the film, leaving everyone literally hot and bothered. The finale version of 'Whipping Post' literally raised the performance bar for any future attempts. The temperature heated up until the wooden floors at the Mission bowed the and sweat dripped from the paintings on the wall by the finale bars of the song.

Known, unknown. Obscure, Famous. These are the words which the establishment uses to define who's worthy of praise. They still don't realize the measurement stick by which many go by is steeped in the confirmation that just who is worthy of adoration is adjudged by sheer talent, and staying power…especially when they are not 'famous'. Said artists are utterly dedicated to their art and their fans. With relentless drive for creativity and honest devotion to its delivery, Duffy Bishop has proven her absolute worth in this regard.

She is the salt of the earth and is famous beyond words.
