2010 OMHOF
Scholarship Award Ceremony Winners!
text and photos by Ty Hitzemann
On May 12th Jimmy Mak’s Jazz Club in Portland again graciously hosted the 2010 OMHOF Scholarship winner’s presentation for musically gifted graduating high school seniors from all around Oregon.
Along with top notch food and beverages the audience was again treated to some of the most promising talent from these young people who play, in many cases, a variety of instruments.
Vocalist Cara Gabrielson is from Beaverton High School. She showcased a very strong and mature voice, delivered with exceptional vibrato. Cara sang to the whole room, making eye contact with everybody when she sang, Zaita Barbarios, Silent Noon and the Little Mermaid.
She has as many as 7 awards and has played with some top-notch musical institutions and Organizations such as: PYP, OBT, OS and PYC.
With six 1st place competitions under her belt, and several State-Honor orchestra key involvements, Lake Oswego High School Viola player Julie Asparro is as varied in style as she is agile with her instrument.. She carried Stamitz- viola concerto in D, and Brahms- viola sonata no. 2 in E flat with every intricate movement. Confidence and energy dripped off of every note. Although these pieces seemed pretty rigorous and strict to the composition- Julie seemed almost playful at times, throwing in some Gypsy type nuances, which only added personality too them with her own flavor. Her sister Jenny Asparro accompanied her on piano.
And speaking of…Jenny Asparro, who also hails from Lake Oswego High School, plays both violin and Piano. Aside from holding several 1st place honors and several placing competitions at her young age, she has a number one rating for four consecutive years at OSAA District Solo Competition. She also teaches violin through PYP Youth mentor program.
Jenny played beautiful and haunting renditions: Chopin- Nocturne Opus No. 2, Bach- Sonata in G minor, Adagio and a Mozart duet. Jenny’s hands moved as if she’d played for 100 years and she played some incredible note flurries.
Rebecca Lomnicky is from Corvallis High School and plays Piano, Scottish Fiddle and possesses a very nice voice. She has won 3 impressive awards for her fiddle playing, has been honorably mentioned in Dirty Linen Magazine and has performed with too many All-State Orchestra’s to mention(refer to OMHOF home page)
She also has a released CD of her work called, “The Call”. Rebecca is so popular that she was committed to a prior playing engagement, so we were not graced with her presence. Instead we were treated to 3 selections from this release.
More than competent, and along with the expected Bluegrass flavor, her playing structure contains jazzy notes which call to mind Bela Fleck. There is also a reminiscent hint of sweet Irish. Everyone liked it and highly recommend her CD. I’m quite sureyou can pick this CD up at Music Millennium.
Jimmy Mak's is a top notch jazz venue and purveyors of very fine appetizers and dinner fare. They carry a good selection of wines and spirits. Mak's has hosted the last two Scholarship Award Ceremonies at no charge. For that, Buko.net ranks Jimmy Mak's as tops
Thanks to SafeCo for funding the 4th scholarship in a row...they've been there from the start and have been of primary support...super tops!
