Winos Do Not March: Philly Phunkestra's Halloween Zappa Show at the Whiskey.

Philly Phunkestra's Halloween 2010, The Whiskey

What better way to trick or treat than at Portland's premier super-nod to Frank Zappa's famous Halloween shows in N.Y. Circa mid-70's. This night looked much like it too, especially when compared to his 1977 film, 'Baby Snakes', which was projected in Gigantia on the back wall for effect for any there who wondered just what's the deal we're dealing' in. Cheapness was abound in all its glory, avant-garde disregard and misbehavior was the tone set for everyone- and all lived up to the stinky standard. Oh, what class to snod a boogered finger at the status quo.

Philly's Phunkestra made it all happen perfectly with their own twist on FZ's landmark album, "Overnight Sensation", played in its entirety. A big Band ala funk display of early Mothers' antics; they at once galvanized each decade of Frank's monster catalog with a stunning disarray, liberally mixing over the top costumes, fuzzed out lead guitar, claymation figures in various porn carmelizations. 10 band players staggered against each other so tightly they were switching costumes w/ each blessed note and crescendo . The brass section VERY reminiscent of Frank's final line-up in '88...even a bit of the old Bongo Fury, complete w/ an Ike Willis look-a-like dressed as a voodoo Doctor from the "You Are What You Is" video.

The crowd belched a mind-blowing array of stars; Beeker and Kermit the Frog, Capt. America, Dinah Mo-Hum(w/ her snatchy sister), Angel Martin(Rockford Files), many wonderful winos...even Poncho, the acid gobbling dental floss merchant. A tiny pony was rumored to roam about the room. It was halloween, so WTF, many things were appearing after Poncho began his slow decline as he began peaking on something-just look at the photos and watch him melt to the point he couldn't even appear in the costume contest, swaying, slobbering and staring at them like that blown Hell's Angel from the Altamont concert. His huge mustache slowly disappeared until all one could see was a couple synthetic hairs trailing out the corner of his well-bitten lip…Brotha 'Jones Crusher'!

Yoko Mammy sang most of the tunes on her crutches and had no problem kicking all the Dancin' Fools Tryin' to Grow a Chin out there w/ her scuffed up cast. The crowd Stuck Together until Ms. Pinky showed up and Tweazed the bass player...using her Friendly Little Finger. Cynthia Plaster Caster showed up and talked to an awful lot of guys in attendance. At least some things never change.
I'm starting to sound like Paul Stanley...but he was there!

Philly's Phunkestra is the real deal and should be seen AND heard...Buko.net will return and brag more!
